PROBLEM OF THE BRITISH HOUSEWIFE. The British, housewife’s problem is
becoming day by day more difficult, says the “Daily Mail.” It is hard to find a commodity in general demand that lias not advanced in price. Attention has been drawn to the butcher’s bill. A largo City store doing a- middle-class trade has prepared juice lists showing the following among other advances to take effect: Beef tea in 2oz bottles from Is, to Is 2d; in skins, from 8s to 9s per lb; beeswax, 2s to 2s 3d per lb; chicory, 8d to lOd: smoked fish, 5d to Gd and 8d ; tinned fruits, IJd ; and macaroni id. Oatmeal in 71b bags will cost Is 9d next month as against Is 6d to-day Bacon is being advanced another Id per lb. .. . Notable increases per pound since the war began are: —Butter 2d and 2£d, bacon 3d to 4d, cooked meats 4d to Gd, Cheshire cheese 3d. and pork sausages 2fd. ■ At the greengrocer s turnips havo risen from 4d to Is a bunch; tomatoes from Gd to lOd; and French beans from 4d to Is per lb; Tasmanian eating apples from Is Gd to 2s 4d foi 51b; cooking apples from Is to 2s ioi 51b; carrots from 4d to Gd and Is a The fishmonger’s prices have advanced on an average 25 per conl .
