THE NEW CEMETERY.

PROPOSED NEW HOAD. The Mayor reported to the Borough Council committees last evening as follows: In the matter of the request of the; Cook County Council that the Borough should allow them to lay off a. > road along tho eastern boundary of the Makaraka Domain, and that the Borough should contribute towards the cost of a bridge across the Taruheru River giving access to the new cemetery, I have to report that I have gone carefully into the matter; and find that the* Makaraka Domain is Crown land, the Borough Council only administering in trust, and. .they would not he empowered to dedicate for road purposes; but under, section 27. sub-clause K, and section 33, clause F of the Public Reserves and Domains Act, it seems clear that the Government could give the necessary land for reading. It might, however, be necessary for the Cook County Council to take the same under the Public Works Act, but this is a matter that can. be settled between themselves and the Land Survey Office. Personally I see no objection from the Borough’s point of view to allowing the road to be made through the Domain and through the new cemetery. provided, of course, .that the road is kept on the boundaries. I could not recommend my Council to contribute anything towards the cost of formation and shingling _of this road, as 1 consider that the giving of the land will be full compensation ; probably, however, should it- meet with your approval, the Council might offer to subscribe, say. one-third of tho cost of a bridge, provided a limit was placed on the amount. The convenience of having a through road from \\ hataupoko to .just this side of the Makaraka railway station would be a very great benefit to the Flexion, Mangapapa, and other residents in that vicinity. _ The amount voted by the Council towards the bridge would have to come out of general account; hence mv reason for limiting the expettiture. The report wa> adopted.
