WAIRARAPA EXPRESS DERAILED.
NO ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED
'CPBESS ASSOCIATION TJ&KGtAM.) PAHIATUA, July 11. An unfortunate accident occurred to tho North-hound Wellington-Waira-rapa express yesterday afternoon between Pahiatua and Konini stations. The engine ran into a slip and left the rails and toppled over towards the river. Tho carriage behind the tender ran up against the hank and, hut for this, probably the whole train would have been pulled off tho line into tho river. Fireman Fletcher was extricated from under tho coalbox, the latter being right across the rail. He had a miraculous escape and received no serious injury 7. The enginedriver, named Flaws, and tho passengers escaped unhurt. There were several women and children in the derailed carriage. Tho lino was considerably damaged and the service is disorganised. The slip is not large, but a huge boulder of about half a toil is the principal obstruction. At tlie scene of tho accident there is a curve, also a cutting. The line runs along the river bank.
