NOTE OF THE DAY.

FILL. UP THE CHEQUE LARDER ! The general public will note with sympathetic interest that the. annual meeting in connection with the Hen 1 Matoroa Homo is to be liel<l at Findlay’s Rooms to-morrow. This valuable institution has now been established seven years and it continues to do excellent work. It is the case that at the present time there are some 20 children in the Home-, their ages ranging from eight years down to 12 months 1 , and in every instance the children arc progressing well 1 . In connection with the forthcoming anniversary, we are asked to mention, a special appeal is being made to the public to refill the Creche larder. The Home, as is well-known, receives a contribution from the Hospital Board to the extent of 7s 6d ner week in rospoct of each, child, or, to bo more exact, in all but one of the eases that is at present in the Home. Eor tlie balance of the moneys required for its upkeep the Creche authorities have to rely on voluntary contributions. In the past the public lias been verv considerate and it is confidently felt that on the occasion or this appeal (which is not for money contributions but for gifts of groceries and other necessities) the response will lie equally gratifying. _ J here arc, it sec-ms, one or two items m respect of which the Homo is not in need, as for instance, oatmeal, of which, thanks to the generosity of a well-known resident of the district, a supply sufficient to last for six months *is on hand. Among other items that are, however, in very snort supply are sugar, tea, coroa, cornflour sago, biscuits, soda, soap, flour and potatoes and in particular wood anti coal. As regards clothing, the Home, it would appear, is fairly well provided, although gifts in that direction are alwavs welcome. It is hoped that all who are in a position to make contributions to assist in refilling the Creche larder will! send their gifts, whether small or large, either to tlio Home direct or on Wednesday next to Findlay’s Roome where, as lias boon pointed out, the annual meeting, to which everybody is welcome, is to take plluee to-morrow.
