SHIFTING THE CAMP.

AUCKLAND PRESS OPINIONS. ADMINISTR AXI ON ROUNDLY CONDEMNED. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent AUCKLAND, July 11. Commenting on tho abandoning of Trent ha in camp the “Herald” says:— “Wliat the country needs is that a {-lean sweep he made of the incompetent medical authorities, from Mr Rhodes downwards. The broom “Reform” should remove from authority those whose indifference or incapacity "is bad enough at any time and is a positive menace in times of emergency. Mr Rhodes is a very reputable citizen, hut who will suggest that lie is a callable and energetic administrator? His only apparent claim to office—as is the "onlv apparent claim of his colleague, Mr Fraser—is that lie belongs to the. southern group ot politicians who have imposed themselves upon the Reform administration as upon its predecessors. Mr Massey should find a now Minister for Public Health and should insist upon the introduction into the service of enough competent medical men, paid adequate salaries, to give the Department a new tono and to ensure public confidence. If the politicians will not permit the ablest men to come to the front irrespective of party in a National Cabinet- under Air Massey’s capable leadership, Reform members of tho Houso must insist that their | own best men arc called to tho administration or must expect the inevitable consequences of public indignation.”

The “Star” says:—“We are glad.to be ablo to congratulate tho Dominion in general ana our B-xp on ionary Reinforcements in particular on the decision reached by tho Government to removo tho training camp from Trcntham. We need hardly say that all the charges brought against the Defence Department in this connection have been amply substantiated. The inefficiency of the administration and tho lack of adenuate provision for tho health and comfort of our men have been proved beyond a shadow of doubt, while the hast© with which tho authorities are now transferring the 'men from Trcntham to less depressing and dangerous surroundings is in itself enough to confirm all that was ever said about .tho Department’s deplorable mistake in selecting this most unfortunate site for a training camp.”
