COAST NEWS.

TOKOMARU BAY,

(From Our Own Correspondent.) TOKOMARU BAY, July

A meeting of the committee of the Percy Graham presentation was held at the Te Puka Hotel on Friday night, i Mr J. Somervell presiding. Reports were received from, most of the list holders and every list showed a satisfactory response. Mr Graham, who has occupied the position of manager of the Mako Mako station for the past seven years, is a football enthusiast and has taken a keen interest and given practical support to the local Wanderers Football Club. He has filled the position of president of this club for some years and when word of his departure, from the district was received the Wanderers decided that jt was due to them to mark their appreciation of his services by a presentation. Lists were circulated and the response exceeded expectations. In the last annual report of the. Wanderers reference was made to the practical support Mr Graham had given to the team and this appreciation is permanently recorded. It is much to be regretted that Mr Graham left the district as early as lie did as had lie remained to receive the presentations a substantial subscription would have been available and would have exceeded the present lisvs which are also satisfactory. Mr Graham was the recipient of a presentation from the Wanderers Club last season. The committee which was fully representative of all the subscribers and also of the other clubs decided that the presentation should take the form of a purse of sovereigns and an illuminated address. In view of the fact that Mr Graham, owing to business reasons necessitating, loft Tokomaru Bay earlier than he anticipated it was decided that the presentations be. forwarded on to him at bis present address at Palmerston North. Regret was expressed that Mr Graham was unable to remain and meet bis friends of the - Wanderers Football Club and also bis many other friends in Tokomaru Bay and district, as be would then have received their practical demonstration of their best wishes Tor his future welfare. It lias rained here continuously during the whole of the afternoon, but despite the rain Wanderers juu. v. City jun. played their game. The result was Wanderers 6—City 3. The s.s. Tongariro relieved the pressure on the available space at the local freezing works by clearing a cargo of approximately 10,01)0 carcases of mutton. The works are still going on beef and mutton and the arrival of another Home boat will be nfrich appreciated by all concerned. The question of t-lie provision of Workers’ Homes is much discussed here and applications for same arc being received by tlie Department. Mr YV. Oates, sen', is interesting himself m the matter and lias all the information in his possession. Cp to the present time about a dozen applications only have been received. There are a large number of married men in the Bay, in permanent positions, who would be only too glad to avail themselves of the provisions of the Act and in the opinion of those concerned here, it is up to the Government to send up an officer, previously giving notice of his arrival, to arrange for the institution of these homes. In Ihe peculiar circumstances under which land for building or other pur- j poses can be obtained here, any action j by the Government towards settling j in homes of their own workers who are, in the first place in a position to take advantage of the Act, and in the second place are anxious to secure homes of their own, would be much appreciated by those concerned. In the meantime the writer understands j that the present available information is in the hands of Mr W. Oates, sen.
