WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL

.At, the monthly meeting of the Waiapu County Council there wore present Messrs. K. S. Williams (chairman), A. B. Williams, It. W. Kemp, G. W. Heald, W. Oates, J. H. McNeil, and E- R. Murphy. C ORRESPON DEN CE. Tlie District Engineer wrote approving of plans and specifications prepared for the expenditure of a grant for forming GO chains of the AlangaoporoTikitiki road.—Received. Air. J. S. Hicks wrote asking for extension of time for the completion of his contract delayed through weather conditions.—Extension of two months granted. * The Superintendent of Workers’ Dwellings wrote in reference to the Council’s desire, to cr, ct dwellings at To Piiia for the use of its employees, enclosing a copy of the Counties Amendment Act of 11)13, and giving as his opinion that the land may be used for dwellings under tins Act.—Received.

Alcssrs. Barclay and MeLachlan wrote asking the Council to complete the balance- of 49 chains of the Pukia-liieru-Karakatuwhero road!, 17 chains of which have already been formed.— Engineer to be instructed, to lay off the road and call for tenders as soon as possible.

The Minister for Lands wrote in reference to the tenants' of Block V., Taitanice, who are affected by lack of access to their holdings, and pointing out that the Department had the formation of the road in hand, and .suggesting that the tenants, Messrs Stevens, Mclntyre, and Reach, should, if they so desiro, apply to the Hau'ke’s Bay Land Board for a postponement of their rent for 12 months.—Received.

The secretary of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce wrote forwarding a copy of a resolution passed by the I’a tea Chamber of Commerce, arid stating that his Chamber approves of the resolution, and recommends this Council to adopt it. The following is the resolution:—“That it is advisable in the opinion of this Chamber that in all contracts of local bodies for work a provision should be inserted as follows;—That except where expressly provided herein to the contrary ail goods and material for use on tins contract shall lie of British or BruiffiColonial manufacture.—Cr A. B. Wil limns _ proposed, seconded by Cr McNeil, that the secretary of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce be informed that the resolution of the Ratea Chamber of Commerce lias this Council’s approval except that in the opinion ot this Council the barring of goods and materials for use on contracts should be confined to the nation’s enemies only.

Air Beckett wrote stating that at a meeting of the Northern AYaiapu Settlers’ Association he was instructed to ask the Council to take land for stock paddocks in To Araroa and Hick’s Bay, and suggesting sites. He also asked that stock paddocks be free as charges are still made for the use of the stock paddock at Hikuwai. —Air Beckett to he informed that the Engineer has the matter of taking stock paddocks in hand and that in future no charge will he made for the use of the stock paddock at Hikuwai. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote re Tuatini gravel reserve, stating that no gravel reserves or quarry reserves are t-o ho invested in any local bodies but they have, the right to use them.—Received. The secretary of the Hospital Board wrote making applications for £-100 for the present requirements of the Hospital.—Payment passed. Seven applications for the renewal of slaughterhouse licenses were granted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer’s report was read and considered. Cr McNeil proposed and Cr Alut'phy seconded, that work in connection wi th, the Roroporo-Tikitiki road be authorised. Cr. Heald proposed and Or McNeil seconded, that the Engineer, call tenders for the AVhangaparoa River road. The Overseer’s report was read. Cr. A. B. Williams said he had been asked to inquire whether the Council would accept the dedication of now roads at the Freezing Company’s sections at Tokomaru Bay. Cr. Heald proposed, seconded by Cr Oai.es, that the Council accept the dedication of the roads mentioned. It was decided to appoint a committee to consider the expenditure of loan moneys next season to enable plans and specifications being prepared so that the work can bo commenced in the spring. Cr. Oats proposed, seconded by Cr. Kemp,, that Mr Gilrnour, sonr., be appointed overseer of the Rotokautuku bridge works. The Chairman gave notice of motion that be would propose at the next meeting that a general rate of two ponce in the pound be struck. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to .-£ll-17 14s scl.
