G. Jones arrived at Trenthum on Monday night with Multiply. Word is to hand from Rangibikci of the death of a one-time cross-coun-try champion in plain Bill. Although lie never won a National, the day he carried 12.0 to victory in mud in the Wellington Steeplechase, run at the old Mutt course, his form was good enough to win nine out of ten Nationals.
Hay light Bill appears to have completely recovered from his recent hurt, and is reported to be quite sound again. During his retirement lie put on a lot of condition, but he is confidently expected to be in the best form before he is required to saddle up for Iris engagements at the Brand National fixture.
The well-known trainer, F. Jones, was married last week at Iticcarton.
Ladoga is suffering from a miRT attack ol influenza, hut-no serious results are anticipated.
»ince racing at the A.'lt.C. Meeting Admiral Soult has been more or less sore, and he may not be at his best for the Grand National Hurdle Race. Fortify, who is one of the most fancied candidates for tlio Winter Cup, is getting through a satisfactory preparation at New Plymouth.
The fact that G. Jones has only hooked accommodation for one horse for tlio Grand iSVrtional meeting looks as if Multiply will be the only representative of the stable at Iticcarton next month'. The Multi fid gelding is nominated for the Winter Cup, Grand National Hurdle Race, and Sydenham Hurdles, and it is. more than probable that he will represent the stable in preference to Chortle. Latest English files give the information that the King’s colt, Friar Marcus, did not start in the Derby. •Reputation is reported to have settled down nicely in his new quarters at Rand wick, and is getting on well. His trainer, F. McGrath, thinks the Martian colt a perfect type of thoroughbred. <So far it has not been decided whether the New Zealander- will start in any of the big spring handicaps, but. he is sure to contest .some of the weight-for-age events.
Trainers and jockeys should note that applications for licenses for the ensuing season must be in the hands of the secretaries of the district committees by Monday next.
Mr M. 0. O’Connell, of Masterton, nominated his Australian-bred horse Two Lights for the New Zealand Cup, but- the nomination does pot appear to have arrived in time. Wise Bird is stated to he as forward as any horse that is being trained at Iticcarton- at present, and the other Ghokob'ore representative who is showing excellent form on the track is Nightwatah. Bluestone, Haskayno, Multiply and Ruapani are the favorites for the Winter Cup in Wellington, and Multiply and Morning the favorite double for the National Hurdles and Steeplechase.
After his two performances at Gisborne, Raupani lias come into favor for the Winter C'up. .For the first time for many years, neither the Hon. J. D. Ormond or Mr ,T. H. Lowry are represented! in the New Zealand Cup nominations. Even so, the Hawke’s Bay contingent is a
strong one, comprising as it does Sea Pink, Indigo, Blackall, Mummer, Midnight Star, Fair Rosamond, fcir Alba, Kooya, and Croesus.
If Plymouth is- brought across to compete in the Grand National lluirtles at Riccarton, it will be in the colors of Air G. L. Stead, wlio piuchased the.gelding recently. It was m his new owner’s colors that lie ~woji at the Belgian Relief Alceting, held at Epsom on 17th June. Although he did not do much las't season the previous yc&r Plymouth .scored t/liiee times as a-tliree-year-old. Gisborne owners who liavo representatives in the Avondale Stakes and Guineas to be run on j-epteinboi 15 and 18 are as followsAvondale, Stakes: Air F.
