COUNTY TELEPHONE SCHEME.

TE- EAR AKA RESIDENTS ABANDON PROPOSAL. TOO COSTLY AND UNSATISFACTORY. The Wai’kolm settlers Irave decided to abandon the proposal to erect a. telephone line between Gisborne and To Karaka. Correspondence, which explains itself, came before tiie Maikohu County Council at its meeting yesterday. Mr. Chas. H. Bridge, secretary of the Telephone Scheme Committee. wrote, stating that at a general meeting of ratepayers hold at To Karaka on June 29, the subcommittee presented its report, of the proposed telephone scheme between Gisborne and To Karaka. and on to Otoko, as embodied m the petition now tinder consideration by the Council. with a recommendation that it. be not proceeded with on account of its expense, unsatisfactoriuess, and unwiekiiiioss. The- meeting appreciated the committee’s suggestion, and resolved to abandon the whole scheme. On behalf of the signatories to the petition. he wished to heartily thank the Council for having so promptly and carefully inquired into tho ways and means of the scheme, and to specially thank the Countv Engineer for his verv full, concise, and plain statement. Tiiev appreciated the Council’s service in advising them not to proceed with a scheme'that might have led them into serious financial troubles later. Mr Norman Green, Otoko. wrote statin<t that there were several settlers at Otoko agreeable to take one telephone wire, providing the Council could give them the approximate cost per vear and this was reasonable. Cr Peacocke said ho thought the Council should free the signatories from anv liability under the petition. The Cleric pointed out that the Council had undertaken no liability tn connection with the matter, and, therefore, there was nothing to tree the signatories from. The letters were received.
