An elderly Native, named Aparaiua Pahina, who hails from Tokomaru Bay, appeared before Mr W T . A. Barton. S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, on a charge of having been found drunk in Grey Street on W ednesday last. Accused, who was a first offender, was convicted, and fined os and costs 7s, or 24 hours’ imprisonment. He was also charged with committing a grossly indecent act at the same time and place. When asked to plead, accused naively said that if he did commit the offenco ho would plead guilty. After hearing the evidence of the arresting constable His Worship said that there was no doubt but that accused committed the offence, while under the influence of drink, but that was no excuse. A fine of £2 and costs 12s 6d,Y>r 7 days imprisonment, was imposed, the sentences to bo cumulative. Daniel Fitzpatrick, who appeared to answer a charge of drunkenness on Wednesday morning in such a state of inebriotv that the Magistrate ordered him to be remanded, again came before the Court, having once more been locked up for drunkenness after leaving the Court. For the first offence, he was fined 5s and 2s ousts or 24 hours, and for the second 10s and 2s cost, or 48 hours’ imprisonment, the sentences to bo cumulative.
