SAN MARINO JOINS IN. LITTLE ARIV3Y FIGHTS WITH ITALIANS. PROTECTING VENICE. SQ(JADRON OF HYDROPLANES USED. ROME, July 7. One thousand Italians captured in Galicia have been sent to Italy. All the San Marino army of 12,000. except two, are fighting alongside tho Italians. A squadron of hydroplanes, manned by French naval airmen, under the command of Lieut. Conneau, is station at Venice to protect the city; also for the reconnaissance of Austrian fleet movement. The Government is hastening the construction of numerous hydroplanes. The captain and engineer of the German steamer Lemos, interned, at Venice, have been sentenced, to ten years’ imprisonment for spying and night signalling information to the Austrian fleet. An official communique states: One of the commonest Austrian tricks at Isono is for parties of men to advance to positions, raise their hands, then suddenly fall on then- faces and unmask dense lines of sharp-shooters. Official: Wo are progressing on the Carsict plateau, and took prisoner from July 4 to July 7 HOC men. Our dirigibles effectively bombarded ail important junction , northward of Opeina, near Trieste. Our aeroplanes bombed an aviation, camp at Aisovizza, eastward of Gorizia causing fires, and also bombed the Nab.resina station and returned safely, despite artillery and machine-guns. President AVilson is conductingnegotiations with Mr Gerard and the German Foreign Office regarding a reply acceptable, to the United States. It is generally believed in Washington that Borlih is playing for time, and is anxious to prevent a rupture and is seeking clues regarding the minimum terms tihe {United States will accept. GERMANY’S RECRUITS. ANOTHER MILLION NEXT MONTH. (Received July 9, 12.50 a.m.) LONDON, July 8. The “Daily Express’s’’ Geneva correspondent says it is reported that Germany on August 1 will place a million men in tho field, chiefly from the Landsturm —mem who have never served and elderly reserves and wounded men. The whole of the fronts will be covered, but a large part will be sent to the Russian front to relieve the .exhausted Germans there Eighteen army corps have been training and equipping for six months. BURNED ALIVE. ANOTHER GERMAN HORROR. (Received July 8, 9.20 p.m.) LONDON, July 8. Reuter’s Paris correspondent states that shots were reoently fired at ft German patrol in the streets of Poronne. Tho Germans insisted that the shots came from a house occupied by a bailiff called Berbecq. 'Die latter pointed out tihat the marks made by the bullets proved that he was not guilty, hut tho Germans took no hoed of the explanation, and lodced up Derbecq and his daughter, sprayed the 'house with petrol, and set, it on fire.- Both were burned.
