BRITISH TORPEDOES.
Great improvements have boon made in the torpedo used by the British fleet. I'lnginecr-Commander Sydney Hardcastle, who is in engineering charge at the G-reeuoek torpedo factory, lists perfected a torpedo that weighs 16001 b, and that carries a charge of 2501 b of explosive, enough to blow" the whole side out of a battleship. It has an effective range of 7000 yards, and the gyroscope plays an important part in its efficiency. Indeed, it is claimed' for the new type of gyroscope, that, it is more certain of hitting its mark than the big guns. Furthermore, the gyroscope rudder can be set so that the torpedo can .be fired from the broadside of a ship, when it will turn through an angle of 90 degrees, and run dead ahead to its target. Your torpedo man pats his pet on the side, and affectionately declares that, short- of speech, it can be made to do anything. In its own way it even Talks, but when it does it roars.
