A Clutlia Valley deputation urged the construction of a line from Balclutha to the Tuapeka mouth, about twenty miles, and offered to give the Government a guarantee of payment of 3 per cent, interest on the cost of construction, AAdiich was estimated at £60,000 for a light line and £IOO,OOO for a heavy line, but they) stipulated that the small contract system be used and that there be prompt construction.
