FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5. (Before Mr. YV. A. Barton, ,S.M.) Dll UN KE NNE'S S. Two first offenders were convicted and fined 5s and 2s costs,, in dof aim 24 hours’ imprisonment. John Tiffen pleaded not guilty to a similar charge, hut- after the evidence of the arrresting constable had Vbcen taken, he was fined 5s and 2s frosts, or 24 hours’ imprisonment. 'RESISTING- THE POLICE. John Tiffen pleaded guilty to a charge of having resisted Constable Scott in the execution of his duty. A fine of 20s and 2s costs was imposed, in default four days’ imprisonment. A WILFUL DAMAGE. A further charge of having doiio wilful damage to Government prop; while in the police cells was ailsu brought against the same 'accused, ivho again pleaded guilty. Sergt. Hutton explained that the damage consisted in the breaking of a window in the station. Accused was fined 10s and 7s cost-s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment-, the three sentences to ibo cumulative.. THREATENING BEHAVIOUR. James Kelso pleaded guiilty to a charge of threatening beha viour wherew a breach of the peace was commitHe explained that he acted under provocation, and struck a man called Dennett in self-defence. After hearing evidence as to the occurrence, His Worship inflicted a fine of £l, with costs 11s, or four days’ imprisonment. BREACH OF BY-LAW. Hutton pointed out that tiefendant bad rendered himself liable to a charge of indecency, as there were women only a short distance Mr. Stock appeared for defendant, who .pleaded guilty. Counsel stated that defendant was in England when the by-law was passed, and was unaware of its existence. Defendant had a private batliing-shcd at the beach, but being sliort-siglitcd Jio bad got into the water before lie that females were in the vicinity. Prior to (defendant going to England it was permissible to bathe at the beacli without costume before 8 a.m. , ~ His Worship inflicted a penalty oJ 5s and 7s costs.
