LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
QUARTER OF A MILLION ACRES OF NATIVE LAND OBTAINED. (Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 2. The Lands Department has just secured its absolute title to a big area of native land in the North Island, which is to be cut up for settlement on the optional system without delay. It is a considerable time since the Crown actually arranged the purchase,, which comprises quite 250,000 acres, in the counties of Waitomo and East Taupo. The Commissioners of Crown Lands in Auckland and Taranaki have now been instructed to put on all their surveyors to cut up the 250,000 acres for close settlement. The blocks have to bo carefully explored to ascertain the best road routes, and arrangements will also have to be made to provide various means of access through native lands. Then tlic sections.. have to lie planned out to the most advantage. 'The work has been tackled with energy, and in six months there should be a large number of openings for settlers in this promising area, much of which is served by the North Island Main Trunk railway.
