COMMONWEALTH POLITICS

CENTRALISATION OF GOVERNMENT. FEDERAL PREMIER’S VIEWS. United Press Association. Copyright MELBOURNE, Jan. 30. At the Ministerial by-elections, caused by their acceptance of office, Mr. Murray (Premier) and Air. AVatt (Treasurer) were returned by substantial majorities. The Federal Prime Minister, commenting on Air. AVatson’s views on ■the centralisation of Government, states that unification is not within the bounds of practical politics. He thought, however, that extension of the powers of the Federal Government in certain directions was desirable, if not absolutely necessary. STATE GOVERNORS’ SALARIES. THE PROPOSAL FOR REDUCTION. ADELAIDE, Jan. 30. In reference to the suggestion made to reduce the salary of future State Governors, the Minister of Lands states that Sir G. R. Le Hunte informed him that the Governor could not live and carry on the duties on a lower salary than was paid at present. He refused a year’s extension of the position because it would mean that on the salary he received he would lose* money.
