ST. MARY’S SCHOOL.

OPENING CEREMONY

The new additions to St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School were opened and blessed by the Very Rev. Dean Gilian, Vicar General of the Auckland Diocese yesterday morning. After High Mass had been celebrated by the Rev. Father Lane, a procession marched from .the church door to the school, It was headed by the altar boys carrying the crucifix, then came tho Children of Alary, the member* of the H.A.C.8.5., and afterwards the congregation. Alter the Dean had blessed the exterior of tho building, the doors were opened and the large congregation entered. In a brief address the RoV. Father Lane said he had boon three years in charge of the Gisborne parish, and had come to the conclusion that the enlargement of St. Alary’s School was necessary. He had appealed to the congregation for. funds, with the result that the new additions were? undertaken. The Alayor (Mr. W. I). Lysnar) congratulated the Catholics of the parish on the lino building "that had been erected, it was a worthy object to provide education for tho young, and he hoped the children would do their duty by close attention to their studies as the parents had done theirs in erecting the building.

Bio. Aliev, P.P., welcomed Dean Giliaii on behalf of the H.A.C.B.S. Dean Gillan then blessed the school and said the Rev. Father Lane was deserving of great credit for the good work he had done in the parish,, and for the fine building that had been completed. Tie hoped tho children attending St. Mary’s School would advance in reason and in the knowledge of God. He thanked the Alayor for bis attendance, and, referring to the public schools, said the schools provided by public money did good work, but they were not for Catholic children, because Catholics felt there could he no education that was not upon religion. _ A collection was then taken up in aid of the building fund, and after the Benediction the congregation dispersed . The .school will be opened for tho instruction of children ibis morning.
