BOXING.
THE AUSTRALIAN FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.
No fewer than 15,060 persons wore ! present at the Stadium, Rushcuttcr’s Bay, on December 30, when Rudolph Unliolz, who has hold the featherAvcight championship of the Avorkl, and who recently arrived in Sydney from America, met Thorn for tho title of Australian champion. It was a surprisingly large crowd (says the Sydney “Mail”), and, maybe, was as a” protest against the agitation for the stopping of boxing contests. Included ’ among the spectators i were Jack Johnson and Tommy j .Burns. The former, both on 1/is ar- [ rival and departure, got a mixed reception, which he took good-natured-I ly, by taking off his hat, and waving |to friend and Joe alike. Burns had I a flattering reception, but it has been i the same ever since he was ‘beaten, jHe has always reserved ovations, : while Johnson has come in for rather j a bad time. I As a scientific boxer, Unliolz. who had met men with the reputations of Nelson and Cans, was a disappointment. Possessed of great muscular development for one of his size and weight, he relied mainly on his strength. lie dm hit hard, but he has to get there first, and as Thorn shows, a clever boxer should be able to evade the onslaught. Unliolz made most use of his left. Laud occasionally landed pretty hard ‘ about Thorn’s body, .and it was j thought in the early stages that he j "would weiir tho 'Australian down. | ‘Thorn, however, brought his cleverness into plai r . He met the rushes I by landing him straight on the face, ( and after crossed with his right effectually. Unliolz, however, 'gave evi--1 bonce that he could take considerable j punishment, but his opponent did so well that nothing save a knock-out ■■ could havo given Unliolz tlie victory, Land Snowy Baker’s decision in Thorn’s j «•flavor was anticipated.
