LITERARY CIVIL SERVANT.

MR. TREGEAR’S ARTICLES

PROTEST FROM EMPLOYERS

As the result of further contributions to magazines on labor questions by Air. E. Tregear, Secretary for Labor, the employers are. again addressing a strong protest to the Government . Recently there appeared in the “Arena,” tan American magazine, a somewhat strong article from Mr. Tregear’s pen, entitled “Compulsory Arbitration, Under Storm Sails,” and the language of it is considered by the Employers’ Association to be both in--11 ammatory.and highly indiscreet. The Advisory Board of the New Zealand Employers’ Association,/ at the instigation of the Auckland Employers’ Association, submitted a strong protest to the Hon. J. A. Alillar, then Minister for Labor. A reply was received., stating that - tho matter had been dealt with., and that it is not at all probable that any further articles of this character will appear.” . The Auckland Employers’ Association having, on previous occasions, directed the Minister’s attention, through the federation executive, to similar articles written. by Air. Tregear. and in each instance having received from the Minister a similar re- ! -. without any definite result as far as Air. Tregear’s compliance with the assurance was concerned, it is not satisfied with the Ministrial statement, and has, accordingly., passed the following resolution.—“ That this Association places on record its disappointment at the reply received from tho Minister of. Labor by tlie Advisory Board of tlie Employers’ Federal ion oil the question of tlie action of Air. E. Tregear, a public servant of the Dominion, .in writing as he did to the “Arena,” an American magazine, against the employers of New Zealand. Previous complaints of a si ini'Hi r nature have been submitted to the Minister for Labor, and similar answers have on each occasion been received, namely:— ‘That it is not at all probable that any further articles of this character will appear;’ nevertheless, the cause of the complaint still ''remains, and Air Tregear, in defiance of these promises, continues to insult the employers of the Dominion. AYe, therefore, again urge the Govern, ment, either to at once stop such effusions or rid tho country of Air. Tregear’s services; a copy of this resolution to lie forwarded to the Advisory Board, with a strong request for it to take further action in dhq matter.”
