TOWN DRAINAGE.
THE SEPTIC TANK SYSTEM. HAMILTON’S SUCCESSFUL ' SCHEME. The borough of Hamilton, on the banks of the Waikato river, has a successful sewage system into septic tanks that has been in use for some time. A telegram was sent to Hamilton by a ' “Times” trepa-esehtative yesterday inquiring the gniTtieulars of the system installed, and the reply received', furnishes . the following information. Hamilton has a population of about 3000 people, and is widely scattered, being built on both..•sides-of the Waikatoriver. The drainage system was carried out by the borough engineer, Mr. Sims, O.E:, without any extra cost to the ratepayers for advice. The extent of the drainage is three and a half milesv and the sewers are I'rom six to nine inches in diameter. There are two septic tanks, one for each portion of the town. These are airtight, and in them the solids are broken down,, the effluent discharging into the river without passing through filter beds. One tank has been in use over twelve months, and the other over six months. /.The scheme, which cost £7500. is giving every satisfaction- and was anin'oyed of by Dr. Purdy, District Health Officer for Auckland,;
