LOCAL MARKETS
There is very little doing in commercial circles just now and the wholesale traders complain that January has been a very quiet month. Few ; land transactions have taken place, and stock is at a low. value. The s.s. Squall' will. take a consignment of 1 sheep to Whangarei, next week, but so far no sheep have been sent to Auckland or Waikato since last winter. Retail traders report business as only moderately brisk arid' many are feeling the after-effects of- the holidays. Harvesting is now almost over and farmers sue busy stacking’ hay. The dry weather lias had its effect upon the milk supply, and none of the creameries are receiving such large quantities, as they were a few months ago. Eggs are getting scarce, and as the Lenten season approaches are sure to rise in*value. The wholesale merchants report the following prices for produce at Gisborne : Flour is a, little easier consequent upon tho good harvest in the south. Sacks £ll 10s, bags £l2. Potatoes arc plentiful. The season, has been good and, blight has been almost unknown. Best qualities are quoted at £6 per toil. Chaff is cheaper. Local grown can be bought for £4 15s per ton. Best Southern £6 10s per ton. Wheat is quoted at os 3d, and oats at 2s 7d per bushel. Butter (best factory) Is Id;, eggs l Is 6d ; cheese 7d to 8d; bacon 9d to lOd; hams lOd to lid.

The butter market is steady and a fair business is doing.
