[Press Association.]

WELLINGTON, Jan. 3

The third wool sale of the season, held to-day, lasted from two p.m. t-h near midnight and even star lots of single bales were held over till to morrow. There was a large attendance of buyers and bidding'was animated throughout, competition being keener than fit previous sales this season. Americans were, however, working on lower limits, and wools suitable for them were lower in price by about 3d. Other wool sold remarkably well. The Bradford section of purchasers took the bulk of the lines in the catalogue. The French took the best of the lialf-breds and most of the I*mb’s wool at good prices. The range of prices was as follows : —'Merino fair to medium, 8d to 9d; halfbred; medium to good, 9cl to 103-d; Ivdfbreds, inferior, 6£d to 8-Id; crossbred and Romneys, light condition, B*d to ior and shabby s’d to 6d; crossbreds and Lincoln bright 7d to 7 3 cl; inferior to medium 5Jd to 6d; Corriedale 7£d to lambs, fine bright, 8d to BJd; medium to coarse 6-*d to (idj pieces, fine, 4|d to 7cl; coarse 43d to fiicl; bellies, 4-Jd to s>d; locks 2-id to 3-id.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited., report on the Matawhero stock sale held •last Thursday, as follows: — . Stock business has hardly fairly got under weigh for the new year, and, as is usual, the entry of sheep particularly was very small. In cattle the yards were well filled. Sheep.—Our entry comprised 317, of which we sold 152. Speaking generally. the bulk of the yarding was of poor quality, but any lines of wethers or lambs were well competed for, and an unsatisfied demand' was experienced. Several pens wero filled with old ewes which were really done and practically valueless. Our. sales were: Forward owes 6s 7d to 7s 7d; 2 and 4tooth wethers, 10s 6d. Quotations now are all for shorn sheep. Cattle were an exceptionally heavy entry, and it was manifest that there would not he sufficient demand to absorb the whole quantity. Our yarding was 649 "and we sold 248 under fair competition and Jnt satisfactory, prices. Female, stock is still difficult to sell, but grown steers and young cattle were needed, and 1 wo think there will he fair demand experienced for those for some little time to come. The following, arc the day’s quotations: Calves 22s 6d to 25s 6d,. yearling steers 30s to 425, yearling heifers 35s to 40s, 2-year old heifers £2 7s 6d, herd cows £3; dairy cows to £4 7s 6d, steers 15 to 18 months.£2 18s; 2 year

olds £4; 2to 2-J year olds £4 5s to £4 12s.

Beef.—There wus very little demand, the bulk of our "entry being passed. We sold cows at £4 5s and light weight heifers at £2 10s to £3 10s. For steers £6 10s was offered', but vendor was not satisfied with the price. Pigs were a small entry. We sold weaners at 12s 6d.

The next sale*will be held on the 14th inst., and thereafter weekly until further notice.
