A BOATING FATALITY

Charles Peak, a -married man, aged 46, was capsized out of a boat half a mile off Howick wharf. Peak was drowned, but four children in the same boat were saved.
CONFERENCE OF LABORERS
WELLINGTON, Dec 29
A conference of delegates representing the General Farm Laborers’ Union, was opened to-day. The conference will be principally engaged on business connected with the internal working of the Union. Other matters to be discussed) will include the quesion of establishing a weekly journal, and also proposals for more complete,... organisation of working men. Mr. J . Tier’ has been appointed general secretary. " ~
A FINE REMITTED
WESTPORT, Dec. 29
The Minister of Justice has intimated that the Governor lias remitted the fine of £l2 10s imposed on Haakon Haakensen for dealing with uncustomed tobacco. The miormation on which the prosecution was based was frankly given by Haakensen .as witness for the defence in the prosecution of Hallman and Anderson for the Burke murder.
CRIMINAL ASSAULT
-INVERCARGILL, Dec. 29
At the Police Court William Steans and David Buchanan were charged with assaulting an elderly woman, with intent to commit a criminal assault. The case for the police was that at 1 o’clock in the morning the constablo heard screams, and entered tifio house and found the woman unconscious, with a wound on the head. The accused were remanded on bail, themselves in £101) and two sureties of £SO each.
SAWMILL WORKERS’ UNION. Tho Sawmill Workers’ Union has a credit balance of £227. Arbitration Court proceedings cost £Bl. CHRISTCHURCH MOTOR TRIALS CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 29. The anolor 'reliability run to-day were- over 150 miles of country lying between Christchurch. and Rakaia, through the Rakaia Gorge and Mel liven, and back via Ellesmere. The country.is of a kind to try tho cars- both on the hill and Hat, and all in the competition started this morning. As the trial is not one of speed, but of reliability, the times, though taken, are no element in the contest, but the limit is five hours. The weather is: excellent today, as it was yesterday, and the work to date has been eminently satisfactory.
ACCIDENT' INSURANCE RATE
' WELLINGTON, Dec. 29. The New Zealand Accident Underwriters’ Association will increase rates roughly ten per cent, all round as from January 1, tho date of the operation of tho Workers’ Compensation Act. Tho extra charges will not be aiiade until the expiry of the current policies. Liabilities under the new Act will, however, remain covered. . ____
