GISBORNE HOLIDAY BUSINE^F
The postal business transacted in Gisborne during Christmas week was exceptionally heavy, the number of outward mail bags handled from December 17th to December 24th being 574, and the number of inward bags for the same period was 542. The following were the daily returns' or outward mails: December 17, 91 bags, IStii 34 bags, 19th 57 hags, 20tir 2d bags,. 21st- 131 bags, 22nd 59 bags, 23rd 73 bags, and 24th 103 bags. The daily inward returns were s . December 17th 46 bags, 18th 99 bags,Jc _ 19th 113 bags, 20th 29 bags, 2ist 45 bags, 22nd 09 bags, 23rd 110 bags and 24th 31 bags. The value of the stamps sold during the same period was £32S 11s 6d, which, while not a record, is exceptionally high. The telegraph business was also very heavy during the Christmas holidays, the following being the heaviest days: December 21st, 552 messages forwarded. 556 received, and 229 transmitted; December 22nd, 418 forwarded, 490 received and 189... transmitted; December 22, 418 warded, 490 received and. mitted; December 23rd, 660 forwarded, 523 received, and ISS transmitted; December 24th. 1702 forwarded, 1271 received and 791 transanittocf, making a total for four davs of 3332 messages forwarded, 2870 messages received, and 1347 messages transmitted. ‘‘Transmitted messages are those received from various stations for re-transmission to other stations.
