In the December issue of tlio journal of tlio Department of Labor,the Gisborno monthly report reads as follows :—Trade, generally speaking is good., although by no means as satisfactory as during the~~corresponding month of last year. Business people report a very fair month. Skilled traces, on the whole, show signs of rf'jTtffing off, more especially in the building trade, while, on the other hand plumbers and painters have been very busy. There are few tenders out at the present time, and it is not anticipated that much improvement in the building trade will occur during tlio present moptth. Building trades: Bricklaying quiet, all local men employed. Carpentry and joinery very quiet, and a number of competent men idle. Painting busy; all bands fully employed. Plastering quiet: two men idle during the month. Plumbing and gasfitting fairly busy, jpk and all hands fully employed. Woodworking trades: Cabinetmaking and upholstering ouieter than last month, but no operatives unemployed. Coopering fairly busy. Sash and door factories fairly quiet, although no hands off. Sawmilling busy. Engineering trades: Agriculture-im-plement making,electrical engineering, and fitting and turning busy, and all hands employed. Leather trades: Boot-making—Re-pair shops very busy ; all hands fully employed. Saddlery and harness making still continue to improve; no tradesmen 'idle. Clothing trades: Dressmaking and millinery very busy, and likely to continue so. Order tailoring very busy; a number of shops working overtime. Retail trades: Clothing, boots and drapery—Good business reported in all branches.. Groceries—Grocers report fair business, but money, if anything, a little harder to get in than usual. Printing trades : Bookbinding and printing busy, and all hands employ- ' "•^'/leat-freezing, etc : Tanning, .currying and fellmongering very busy, and both works going at. high pressure. Slaughtering, freezing, and preserving—Stock now coming in very freely; a good season is assured. Good butchers have been in demand during the month. Coachbuilding trades; Blacksmithing very busy; all hands fully employed. Coach and carriage building' busy in all branches, and likely to con. tinue so for some considerable time. Cycle and motor trades busy, and fair business reported. operations: Farming, dairying, etc.,—Dairying is still brisk, and the factozues report a large increase in the supply of milk. In regard to agriculture there is a greater area under crop for thrashing - than has been the case for a number of years, and these remarks also apply to crop for feeding off, and io root crops. 1 iKs'killed labor: Work of this class with private employment has been quiet, .although • all_ local labor lias been fairly absorbed. The main difficulty lias been in placing new arrivals from otlir parts. During the vmnth four men were sent to private employment and thirty-five to co-oper-ative works.
