GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING.

Tile ordinary monthly meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was held last evening.' Present: Mr. J. Somervell (chairman), Messrs G. E. Darton, A. Sawyer, F. W. Riach, G. Wildish, Revs. W. Grant, C. Griffin, and L. Dawson Thomas, ;and the headmaster (Mr. F. W. Rowley). A discussion took place on the delayed contract for asphalting the school yard, Mr. Darton stating that the contractor was making no progress, and that the time for the completion of the work had expired. It ivas -decided to call upon 'the contractor to complete the work duiing the Christmas vacation. _ The Hawke’s Bay Education Board forwarded the notice disestablishing the District High School. The letter was received without discussion. , The Borough Inspector asked tho Committee to have the drain leading from the school along Derby Street extended to low water mark. The secretary was instructed to attend to the request. , The Headmaster reported that- the attendance had been very good for the quarter, having been equa.i to 91 per cent, of the roll number. ihe school had been closed for six weeks, and Mr. Kinder would not return to the staff. Mr. Darton'had told him that the Board had recommended Miss Ambridge, Miss Hogg, Miss Humphreys, and Miss Thompson as suitable teachers for the primary school. He (Mr. Rowley) supported the recommendation of Miss Hogg and Miss Ambridge. The Chairman was appointed to deal with the application. ’The Rev. AY. Grant said he would like to see the Committee place on record their satisfaction with the way Mr.. Kinder and Miss Hunt had carried out their duties in the District High School. Air. Kinder had had a good influence over the pupils, and he was sorry that Air. Kinder had not been appointed to the charge of the newly-established _ High School. During Air. Kinder's and Aliss Hunt’s period a'f the District High Slicool the touching bad been most efficient. All*. Grant then moved the following resolution —“That- this Committee expresses its regret that in the circumstances of the disestablishment of the District High School the teachers of the secondary department have to sever their connection with the school: and places on record its warm appreciation Of the work done in this department by Air. Rowley and his assistants, Mr. Kinder aiid Aliss Hunt.” The Rev. C. Griffin seconded, and the Chairman supported the motion, which was carried unanimously. Air. Rowlev thanked the Committee on behalf of the teachers and himself for tlieir appreciation of the work. . The accounts were then passed tor payment and the committee adjourued until February next.
