The Gisborne Master Builders’ Association notify that all members of the Association have decided that a week’s work is to be forty-four hours. The arrangement is to be begin on January 1, and to continue throughout the year. A ballot will be held at the focal Lands Office, Gisborne, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday next for sections 78 and 79, block VIII., Hangaroa Survey District. Applications ifor the same will be received at the Napier and Gisborne Land Offices till 4 p.m. on Monday next. The s.s. Wammera was delayed at Auckland yesterday, and it is doubtful whether she will reach Gisborne sufficiently early to-day for her to be able to leave in time to catch the express lat Napier. It has been .considered advisable, therefore, to make use of the s.s. Mimiro, leaving here this afternoon, to take the Southern mail, which will close >at 2 p.m. to-day. A general meeting of tlio Gisborne Defence Cadets will bo held in the Garrison Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Friday, for the purpose of electing a captain. The corps is now in a very satisfactory condition. There are 58 members on the roll, and the attendances on parade .are very, good. The section competition in drill and shooting, instituted by Lieutenant Somervell, for a silver challenge cup presented by His Worship the Mayor, is now in progress. There are vacancies in the company, for a few recruits. The use of motor cars for high speed travelling is coming largely into vogue both in Europe and America, some of them attaining, a speed of nearly sixty miles and to keep up with the pace this week it’s Rapid potato mashers for fivepence each at Parnell’s Popular Saturday Sales, nineteenth inst. only.
