MONDAY, DECEMBER 14.

(Before Messrs F. W. Riach and J. B. Morris, J.P.’s)

DRUNKENNESS

Two first * offenders were convicted •and were each fined 5s with 2s costs, or 24 hours imprisonment. Wm Joseph Owen was fined a similar amount for a second offence, his first conviction being three years ago. Arthur Carr and Walter Harris were each convicted for a second offence within 6 months. The former was fined 20s and costs, or 4S hours’ gaol, and the latter, who consented to the issue of a prohibition order against him, 10s costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment.

Louis Frederickson, for a third conviction within 6 months, was penalised to the extent of 40s and costs, or 14 days’ hard labor. x John Mathieson, who was making his fifth appearance in 6 months on a similar charge, was sentenced to two months’ hard labor in the Napier prison. Richard Solomon was convicted and fined. 10s with 2s cost, or 48 hours’ imprisonment. / PROCURING LIQUOR. Richard Solomon was further charged with having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order against Qiim. Ser.gt. Hutton conducted the prosecution and said that the circumstances of the case were most unfortunate. Accused had only returned from prison on Saturday morning, and had been met by friends and supplied with liquor. Not alone was this the case but he had also been dirnking in the hotels. On the application of Sergeant Hutton a remand was granted until December 21st. BREACH OF BY-LAWS. A young man named Henry McGarrell was charged with, and pleaded guilty to, having, on November 28th, driven a cart along Ohilder’s Road between the hours of sunset and sunrise without lights. A fine of 10s and 7s costs was imposed.
