COLLUSION WITH THE CREW

It transpires that communication with- stowaways- aboard the steamer Eastern was established by sawing through the flooring between the Chinese passengers’ quarters and the hold. The o£>ening was carefully concealed. An officer,, passing below, noticed a small saw-mark. It is understood that Alie shippers of the stowaways are Chinese members of the crew, wlio divide £BO for each stowaway -safely landed in Australia.
