Free school boobs form the subject of a report read at the last meeting of the 'Wellington, Board of Education. The question was .raised as to the injurious effect on the health of children which, would .result from the books passing from one child to Another, as disease could lurk in the books, and thus be spread. Mr. T. It. Fleming (the Board’s Inspector) said the whole question was that of expense.. The Department had laid down a condition that the children were not to buy hooks in future. It would be absolutely necessary for books to be passed from one child ’to another. Funds would only permit of the purchase of 40 books in a class of 120 children. The only way to avoid the danger of disease was to disinfect the books every term. Mr. A. H. Vile said he considered the Government had done a very bad thing for the school children in giving free books, so that they could be handed from one child to another in the same family. After further discussion, it ■- was agreed to set up a committee to go into the whole question, the committee to report to the Board at a future meeing.
