SCULLING.

THE CHAMPIONS AT WORK.

[Press Association.]

WANGANUI, Dec. 7?

On Saturday -afternoon both Arnst and Webb put in some good -rowing. Webb gltve Green (his pacemaker) -a fairly good start in -a 2-mile spin, and though he rowed particularly weld, the -Champion got very close, to him at the -finish. Starting off at -a 26-27 rate,- Webb drove liis skiff along in splendid! stylo, tho pace being satisfactory all ibhe vrty. Yesterday -afternoon both men were again afloat. Starting -at 24 strokes to tbe minute, Webb gradually drew _ ahead, and when a quarter of -a mile from the finishing post 110 quickened up considerably, striking 26, and he finished at a -fast bat, apparently without having turned a hair.. Arwst and pogj*

wall wore out twice, covering the lull course both morning and afternoon. The morning row was of tho 'usual steady order. In the afternoon- a large number who watched tlie men wore much impressed with the ease and confidence with which Arnst drove his skiff through tbe steamer’s wash, which proved that he is a- much better waterman than some are inclined to think. Arnst,_is down to 13rt lib. but expects to race at J3st 31b. There is some talk of a double sculling race between Arnst and Fogweii and Webb and Green. It is -understood that the friends of the former are willing to back them against the local combination, woo did well together as amateurs. Later. Webb and Arnst did some good work to-dny, both covering the fuel course, their spins satisfying their respective- parties. That the race will be an interesting one is evident, as both men are in great, form. Webb has never looked or rowed better. Arnst is the picture of health, but lie does not get from his undoubted strength the power that lie could were he more -scientific.
