A MARVELLOUS MACHINE.

A NEW ZEALAND INVENTION.!

WHAT AN UP-TO-DATE CASH REGISTER CAN ACHIEVE.

The latest proof of New Zealand’s ability to manufacture something which compares more than favorably with anything that can be imported is the Imperial Cash Register and Recorder. Tills machine was invented by Mr. F. H. Trevellian three years ago, and the inventor has been busily engaged with the manufacturing details of the register until a recent date. A strong company has been formed tQ put the machine on the market, including leading citizens m all the principal towns of the Domm> ion, and the registers are now being turned out. rapidly at the Company’s factory in Madras Street, Christchurch, where 50 hands are kept busily employed. Not only was the machine invented in New Zealand, but everything employed in its manufacture is the product of New Zealand brains and hands. Mr. H. A. Kahn, the Auckland representative of the Company, is at present in Gisborne, and gave a demonstration of the capabilities of the machine to a “Times” representative on Saturday. ■ The Imperial Cash Register is contained in a tastefully-finished metal case. It takes up little space, and evorv working part is sound, easy, and strong, ft is a long away ahead of cash registers hitherto used, as A .•mows not only the cash and credit sales to tho firm, but also all the transactions in detail in work. When the sale is made the assistant makes the entry upon die sale note. On the turning of a handle the sale note is ejected horn ihe register, a copy comes into view beneath a glass indicator, the pluvious 'copy disappearing, the cash drawer is unlocked and tin own loi ward a bell is rung announcing the opening of the drawer a summarised detail strip is brought loiwaid be aeath a glass plate where it remains visible, and the whde mechanism is then automatically locked until tiic cash drawer is .closed. ICgives a sale note to the’ customer, and retains under lock and key a copy for the proprietor. It also, it required, issues a duplicate for the book-keeper, retaining a triplicate, thereby producing a double check over the assistant and book-keeper. It delivers bills and books up credit sales, issues ieceipts and records any accounts paid by customers and keeps a correct tally of amounts and the details ol cash paid out by the firm. . When cash is paid out- the register takes a receipt from the payee and files it away in a compartment de-r-ioned for the purpose. It cheques, notes, etc., are cashed for customers it records the® particulars and telL* the proprietor which assistant gave the change. Where cash coupons aic (riven away by the storekeeper., a coupon attachment is provided, which Is supplied with the register. At the end ot the day there is n complete daybook record of the day s Transactions, while bhe ssumma-iisecl detail strip shows the amount ot cash that should be in the cash drawer. The copies are at hand for immediate reference should a customer dispute an account. Clerical errors are rectified with automatic effect, and with absaluie certainty. It is a system at once simple and effective. ” The feeding and supply rollers and rolls are ingeniously constructed, and tlie recording rolls work with, perfect i ruth and are wonnu as tight as drums. For dissecting the various records from the recording rolls, there i-; supplied a cutting machine w inch can cut off 500 records in ivo and a half minutes. One of the most important features of the business is the manufacture of the record rolls. These rolls are printed to suit customers’ requirements. The rolls are out. -printed, and rewound by a machine designed by the patentee in conjunction with the factory staff, and constructed in the Christchurch factory. 'Phis machine is capable of turning out 1.000,000 printed dockets daily. To obtain this result' many months of experimenting were required, as such o, machine was not procurable in tho world’s markets. t , In appearance and design the machine is as finished a piece of work

•as could be turned out in any part of the world, and in this respect much credit is due to the factory manager, Mr. C. Bristow, and his efficient staff of mechanics. The register promises to revolutionise business ways in the direction of accuracy, despatch, and simplicity, especially in the matter of book-keeping, and is a highly creditable product of New Zealand brains and enterprise.
