COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

ANNUAL MEETING

Tho statutory annual, meeting of the Cook County Council was held at the Council offices, Childers Road, yesterday morning. Present: Crs. AA r . H. Tucker. E. Boland, A. F. Matthews, TUHoldon, F. J. Lysnar, H. White and R. Sherratt. The clerk (Air John- AAVrren) took tho chair.

Or AVihite nominated Captain Tucker as Chairman, and Cr. Sherratt seconded, the nominee being elected •unanimously. Captain Tucker returned thanks for bis election and said that ho blamed himself for tho position tho Council was -in. In tho future he intended to keep down the expenditure and to vote against all expenditure that could bo avoided. The amount for ■maintenance must bo kept down as low as possible, and a close watch kept upon the County finance. Captain Tucker then took tho Chair. ORDINARY MEETING.

The ordinary monthly meeting was then held, the” same councillors being present. CORRESPONDENCE.

' The Gisborne Borough Council in- ; quried what portion of the Patutahi quarry reserve the County desires to ictain for its own use near the Gentle i Annie .as the Borough was desirous of obtaining a quarry site in the vicinity. It was decided to inform tho Borough Council that tho County desiroa to retain the 60 .acre block, Uixd retain a right of way through the 34 acre block. The Council had no objection to tho Borough acquiring the .acre block conditionally that a right-of-way was reserved. The Borough Council also asked permission to erect a chute for facilitating the loading of the Stmker waggon at the Patutahi quarry. permission was granted. Mrs Hale applied for £4 damages sustained by tlie alleged unlawful sale of a horse by the. poundkeeper at s ologa Bay. Mr. AY, F. Hale also complained” of the action of the pouiulv.eeper at Tologa . The letters were referred to the poundkeeper for an explanation, Mr AY. Peryer asked the Council to put tho work of forming the main _n.rui road between. Doulton’s and the Reay in order for the coming winter. It was decided to inform Mr Peryer that the work had been put in hand. Mr J. Hutchinson, Rakauroa, reminded the Council that nothing had been done in regard to taking a road through his property, paying compensation or returning to him the old road. He would like some definite arrangement made as lie did not wish to cause trouble by preventing traffic on the new road, but he could not allow such traffic until somo compensation had been paid. The letter was referred] to tho AVaiko'bu County. Air A. G. Neran offered to take over Air Dickenson’s work of keeping Captain Carr’s grave in order at the Ruakituri cemetery. The offer was accepted. The Hawke’s Bay Education Board ■grunted tlie Council permission to use me AYaerenga-o-ktiri school reserve as a stock reserve at a rental of 2s 6d per year for 'three years. Or. Lvsnar said tho reserve was necessary ’for stock travelling to the Kaleyards. Ho hoped the Council would help to secure the reserve for public use and vote £5 -towards the cost of fencing. Consideration of tlio offer was postponed. Tho Department of Lands wrote stating that there was no intention on the part of tho Department to deprive tlie Council of the quarry site at Patutahi. The letter was received. The Receiver of Land Revenue at Napier forwarded £413 11s oil as thirds for tho half-year ending May 39th, 1908, for land at Motu and Kangaroo.. The (letter was received. • The Manager ..of the Bank of Now Zealand, Air Vincent Pyke, wrote under date November 10th. : “I am surprised at you issuing cheques on the County funds in excess of tho legal limit, and unless you make provision for the .same by 3 p.m. to-day, I shall reluctantly bo compelled to dishonor them.” Tlie letter was received. The Chairman and Crs. F. J. Lysnar, A. F. Aliattkews, Holden and Mr AY. D. S. MacDonald, M.P., were appointed to represent the Council on tlie Hospital Trustee’s Board.

REPORTS, The Clerk reported the financial position of the Council as follows: Overdraft £18,200, cheques outstanding £2,331 los 6d, collected receipts £r3oß Os Bd, accounts for .payment £3932 7s, overdraft December sth., £23,156 Is lOd.
