FURTHER SHOCKS
PROFESSOR THOMAS’ THEORY

AUCKLAND, Dee. 3. Further severe earthquakes were experienced at Whnkatane last night. The evidences go to confirm that there has been an eruption on Whale Island. Professor Thomas. interviewed, said that tile indications point two vnys, either that the water obtained access to the hot- volcanic rocks below tlie surface, or volcanic steam has accumulated until it lias produced a fissure, or eke this may bo a stage of volcanic activity along the recognised line of volcanic action, in which case there may occur an explosion such as rent Taiuwera.

Pond, Government analyst, who about thirty years ago was part owner of Yv h fie Island, and resided there for a few weeks, informs a •-Herald” representative that the phenomenal observable on he isiuul arc probably due to clouds of dust caused by a huge land-slip on the eastern side of the island. When •he resided on tlie island .about thirty years ago there were, he aiys, evidences that such slips had occurred prior to that time. Those slips, liesaid. might be due to tho earthquakes at Whnkatane.
