CORRESPONDENCE.

[Correspondence on public matter.', is welcomed at all times, but it must, bo distinctly understood that this journal is in no way associated with tlio opinions of its correspondents.] LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT. [To the Editor.] Sir, —In politics and upon the nolicense' question the press and the public have been somewhat warmly interested. and the opinions of the community have been divided. The attention necessary to the proper discussion of these important questions is no longer-demanded and the public now have time and opportunity to enter upon other questions, especially those of local importance. Although the papers have been opposed upon politics and no-license, and the -public mind divided, yet upon the local matters, which the recent -political contests have pushed on one side for the time, there is no substantial disagreement. The press is unanimous in its support of an outer harbor, the necessity for -obtaining cheap and abundant- metal for the roads, both in the county -and the borough ; on the question of drainage of the borough of Gisborne, and upon the necessity for opening up t]ie back country and utilising the timber resources of the district by means of tramways. 1 do not hesitate to request the active assistance of the- “Times” and the “Herald,” because these matters are interwoven with the health, the comfort, and the prosperity of Poverty Bay, and I shall, with your permission, from time to time- discuss in the Columns of the- “Times” the -methods to be -employed towards the ■successful accomplishment- of such useful objects.—l am,, etc. W. L. Rees.
