THE FAR SOUTH.

JAMS AND PICKLES WITH A

HISTORY

A line of goods lias just been dispatched from Auckland consigned to Antarctica, by a Customs Street firm, and the reason for the destination (says an Auckland writer) is to secure the “drawback” on stores for the Nimrod, Lieutenant Shackleton’s vessel. The goods consigned ai’o a special line of pickles, preserves,, jams, •etc., and they have a history. A resident of one of the Auckland country districts, failing to square accounts with; the merchants, was refused supplies oii credit by practically all the principal firms of Auckland. Not to bo outdone lie wrote to the well-known firm of Crosse and Blackwell, stating that he lived in the province of Auckland, New Zealand, and this country, being in a state of very partial civilisation, lie was imable to procure any of the firm’s famous preserves, and.be had' become .so disconsolate without them that he had decided to order a supply direct. Consequently he named so many dozens of bottles of various pickles, olives, jams and other dainty eatables, all of them of the very finest quality, and the goods duly arrived in five or six large eases. The consignee, however, lvad. reckoned without the bank. Eventually they were stowed with a Customs Street house, and there they remained until the other day, when the market of the Nimrod’s larder was available, and the goods have gone forward.
