THE NEW PARLIAMENT.
The returns to* hand up to the present make it evident that -Sir Joseph Ward will face the "new Parliament with a. much smaller majority than before, and it is quite apparent that the Opposition, which has gained many successes at the polls, will have a good deal more to say in the future legislation of the country than has been the case in the past. The defeat of the Minister of hands and also of the Government -whip are very significant, whilst the election of Mr. T. E. Taylor for Christchurch North over a subservient Governmentfollower is an assurance that in the mew Parliament the Government will not lack effective criticism when that as needed. Altogether, the outlook is exceedingly cheefiful from the point of view of those who consider the existence of a strong Opposition is essential to sound government, and Mr. Massey ;is to be warmly congratulated upon the success' of his party at the iiolls.
