PUBLIC NOTICE. J (Published by Arrangement.) Three reasons for the certain defeat of the .No-license attack on the Licensed trade. . ■' , Ist. A great many people who have formerly voted for Prohibition are now supporters of Continuance, owing to the unfair, misleading tactics of the No-license League leaders. Witness. Air. Chattertpn's action, after he had a long and carefullyaudited examination of the figures on both sides before the public. Owing to the terms of this challenge (isued by Air. Ohatterton himself), the Alayor and Mr. Chattorton agreed to abide by the figures, and sign ’them as correct. The signatures were hardly appended when Air.. Chattertou broke his compact, and has been in the press and on the platform strenuously endeavoring to upset them ever since. There is such a spirit of “Win, tie, or wrangle” aboivt this, that it opens the eyes of all observant people to the unfair, unreliable methods of the No-license party, who should, as men, have accepted their fall on finding that the Alayor' and the licensed victuallers were handling official and authentic figures, and I fully expected Air. Chattertom to tender a fair apology to the Alayor for the wholesale denunciation of his statistics, so ably and fearlessly laid before his audience. 2nd. Prohibition does not prohibit. So the one-time advocates of this cure for the drinking habit, have changed front.. They now maintain that if the open bar is abolished, the drinking habit will be practically wiped out. The districts that have gone for experimenting on the Nolicense dines in the south, do not provo to have .abolished, _o r oven lessened the drinking habit in those localities. They merely wipe . out lawful control of the distribution of alcohol beverages and bring in its train unlawful means of supply, and sly shanties of debauch, that are a fruitful source of demoralisation-. 3rd. There is no good and undoubted effect produced by No-license in the southern towns that would appeal to impartial, thinking people, with minds imbued with that caution so neccssirv in proposed changes of a drastic nature, that they should vote out existing institutions by following in the train of wild enthusiasts, no matter how flattering their promises are. “Better suffer the ills you know than fly to those you wot not of.” The licensed victuallers have every reason to congratulate themselves on the support of fche-.gif'&nt majority cl tiie thoughtful electors, based oil the reasonable justice or their causebuilt on the maintenance of public accommodation, the legal supervision of the distribution of alcoholics,, and the saving, of the people from sly grog, and illegal vending of the same. The canvas of the various centres show that there is a substantial majority of voices for continuance, and freedom, against being tied to the apron'strings of gilt-edged faddists, who employ poisoned arrows to advocate tlieir cause, and make rash damaging statements, without -any foundation for these statements.
