The Deputy-Official Assignee (Mr J. Coleman) has received tile following statement from James Lang, bootmaker, bankrupt:—“l commenced business as a- bootmaker about 20 years ago at the Thames. I had no capita], and was helped by a firm. For 10 years I was fairly successful; then things took a bad turn, 'and the last four years I went back. I then came to Gisborne, and started in the same business; but 1 started in debt, and have Iliad a hard struggle all the time. About four years ago I called my creditors together, when a compromise was arrived at. 1 still went on, and with the help of the hoot firm I managed to struggle on. My rent had been raised fioni 35s to "70s a week, and business falling off this •last six months, and what with bad health and so much sickness, 1 have not been able to make it pay. About a year ago 1 started a branch shop at Tologa Bay, but things did not turn out so satisfactory as 1 had expected, and made it a drag on me. The cause of my filing was that a firm, through the Commercial Agency, got a judgment summons against mo. I was not able to pay, so 1 had no other option hut to file. I have no offer to make and no prospects.” There are no secured creditors. The following is the cist of unsecured creditors:: New Zealand Boot Company (Auckland), £73 8s 4d; Jeffries and Co. Staples, hoot factory (Wellington), £SO 0s Id; Tyree, hoot factory (Christchurch) £B2 9s 3d ; Bing, Harris and Co., £145 ss; Grundy and S-h-ennan (rent), £7; “Wade and Gray (plumbers) £1 3s; C. Duncan (butcher), £3 11s; C. E. Smith (Tologa Bay), rent, 17s 6d; total, £591 3s Bd. The assets are: Stock-in-trade at Gisborne and Tologa Bay, £392; hook debts, £224, estimated to produce £170; cash in bank, £l3 12s sd; furniture, £2O; total, £595 12s sd; surplus, £4 8s 9d.
