The latest development of tbc boycott of Japanese goods by the Chinese is on extremely rigorous, though > quite unofficial, prohibition of the use j of the name of the nation boycotted, j As for the boycott itself it is iiourishi ing fresher than ever, i A Hongkong Chinese merchant, according id the Canton correspondent i of tho “Tung Wall Times,” has been j lined 1500 dollars (about £134 7s 6d) ! for importing goods from “some i nation.” He paid the line, and ap- ; pealed to the Chinese- Merchant As- ! sociatiou to as J k the public to forgive i him.

A Singapore firm was charged with .importing cargo from a- “certain nat- ' ion.” Tho Chines© Merchant Society investigated the case, and the head of the firm, becoming alarmed, pleaded guilty, and admitted tho importation of 70 cases of “that nation's” mer-
chandise. He was fined 3000 dollars, | and ordered to send back the goods. The result of the boycott, states the despatch, has not only been felt in | the Australian trade, but the com-
merce between Hongkong and Japan. America and Japan, and Canada and Japan lias also suffered severely. - Another -message from the East, written by ,Mr Tong Chai Chili to Mr. Lo Yun (of Sydney) from HongJcong, under date 25th. September, concludes with a postcript: _ “The boycott is still in full swing.”
