TO REELIEVE POVERTY.
[To the Editor.2 • •-' gi r , —Till I came to Auckland I was under the impression that poverty did not exist in New Zealand; now I know that there is -real poverty and genuine distress. No' doubt some of this is due to intemperance and improvidence, but, on the other hand, some is the result of sheer misfortune. From whatever cause it comes it does not seem right- thart women and children should sniffer as they do. May I venture to appeal to your readers on b©hr< f of the Mission of the Good Shepherd, Grey Street, for cast-off clothes -of all descriptions, to he sold to poor of all denominations at nominal rates? There must be ■many in Gisborne and. neighborhood who hardly know how to get rid of left-off clothing. Hero is a means of turning it to good account. Parcels m>av be sent to Mrs. James East, Gladstone Road, who has kindly consented to receive and forward the same. —I am, etc., H. HAROLD 808 JOHIsS, Lay Curate. tSt. Matthews, Auckland, October 23rd.
