INDECENCY
Gr alia me Steele was charged with having committed a grossly indecent .act in*a public place on the night of October 29. ■ Accused pleaded guilty, and ibergeant Hutton pointed out that the accused had come out of an hotel and committed the act complained of on the footpath. It was dark at the place, and no ladieo were m the vicinity. ' Accused was a respectablo man and well connected. His Worship said that offences of •the sort must be put down. He would, however, in this case not send accused to prison, but would bind him over to come up for sentence when called noon. THE SCAFFOLDING ACT. * The Inspector of Scaffolding (Mr. Hugh Gresham) proceeded against John Somervell, builder, on three charges under the Scaffolding Act oi 1906: (1) That on or about July 10. 190 S, at To logs Bay, he failed to serve within 4S hours upon the Inspector of Factories a notice specifying the nature of an accident which occurred to Albert Payne; (2) that he did set no a scaffolding exceeding 16ft from the ground without having notified the Inspector within at least 24 hours before; (o) that on or about October 27, 1908, at Gisborne, a similar breach was committed. Defendant pleaded guilty, and His Worship pointed. out that the Act was intended for the protection of workmen, and should he enforced. As there were the first cases of the kind in the district he would only inflict a nominal penalty in each case, 10s with costs, but would increase the fine for any further breaches.
