A FRACAS.
RESISTING A BAILIFF
■Some excitement was caused in Gladstone Road last. evening, about 5.80, by ia fracas which occurred between a man named Richard Trevelyan, employed by Air. E. O’Neill, or the buckjumping show, and Air. Bullen, the focal bailiff. From what can be ascertained it would seem that Air. Bullen, accompanied by Air. AV. V. Garrard, proceeded to the section where the buckjumping takes place, with the intention of executing a distress warrant. On arrival tliere Air. Bullen seized two of the horses, and was in the act of leading them away when he was accosted bv Trevelyan, who demanded his authority for" removing the animals. A r arious accounts of what happened differ, but Air. Garrard, who interfered, was struck twice and knocked down by Trevelyan, who attempted forcibly to regain possession of his employers’ property. At this stage another of Mr. O’Neill’s empolyees appeared, secured one of the horses, and took it away, while it is alleged that Trevel van" thereupon tied the remaining horse to the fence, and offered to engag in a bout of fisticuffs with Air. Garrard, whom presumably ho mistook for the bailiff. The police were sent for. Constable.. Pratt soon arrived and secured Trevelyan, and lodged him in the police cells. Trevelyan’s version of the affair is that he was in ignorance of the identity of Air. • Bullen or Air. Garrard. He further states that when he was endeavoring to wrest the rope from Air. Bullen the latter bit him severely on the wrist. Trevelyan will appear the Police Court this morning. It is understood that Mr. O’Neill afterwards regained his horses by paying the amount of the debt for which they were seized, and which, it appears, he had disputed.
