Following a meeting of the Opposi- • tion comer party, Sir John Forrest moved an amendment to Mr. Reid’s motion that the financial proposals be considered in committee on Wednesday next. It is understood that Sir , John Forrest has the support of only a portion of the corner party. The High Court unanimously decided that the Surplus Revenue Act was constitutional, and gave judgment in favor of the Commonwealth as against the States. The State Premiers disputed the right of the Commonwealth to the surplus revenue, and took combined action for securing a decision of the Court as to whether the Act whs valid. - MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. Sir John Forrest’s amendment was lost by 6 to 7. As Mr. Reid’s moi /tion was emasculated by the omission of a certain word to provide for Sir John Forrest’s amendment the cenvsure pjQtioq lapsed.
