BAY OF PLENTY SEAT. MR. GOW’S CAMPAIGN. [Press Association.] ROTORUA, October 10. Mr. Gow, Opposition candidate, addressed a large meeting last night in the Assembly Hall. He received a great reception. He dealt with the legislation of the present party anent advances to settlers, country roads, second ballot, Rotorua-Gisborno railway, thermal springs, workers’ dwellings, land laws, and ■ many other matters, showing tlie callousness of ,&he- Government for the welfare of the ’people. Mr.’ Gow was repeatedly •applauded'- daring the delivery, of his address. Several questions .put were answered satisfactorily, and a vote of thanks was accorded the candidate. AVON CANDIDATES. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 10.' Mr. D. G. Sullivan, a candidate for Avon, addressed the electors last night, and stated that he stood in the interests of the Political Labor League. The speech was on Socialistic lines, and ho advocated land nationalisation as the only remedy for existing economic inequalities and injustices. Ho referred to the Second Ballot Bill as one of the most reactionary and Conservative measures ever placed on the statute book, and the whole object of it -was to prevent the growth of democracy and Socialistic element in the country. He supported -a bare majority and abolition of'the Legislative Council. A motion was -agreed to, affirming the desirability, of co-operative ownership as a means of production, distribution, and exchange, and assorting that tho candidate was a fit representative to fight for the .instiution of co-operative ownership. Mr. G. AV. Russell, at one time member for Riccarton, is announced as a candidate for Avon. THE ASHBURTON SEAT. ASHBURTON, October 10. Mr. David Jones, of AVeedonsp a candidate ifor the Ashburton seat 111 the Opposition interests, -addressed his first meeting in tlie Oddfellows Hall last night. He declared himself a freeholder, and in favor of lands for settlement land being sold to tenants on reasonable terms. He urged the simplification of the Native land laws and a more vigorous settlement policy. Ho severely criticised the Government finance, condemning the extravagant borrowing and building poliev. He favored voluntary conciliation, but was against: compulsory arbitration. He thought tins session’s amending Act was ail improvement on the'old law, but .considered that any compulsion was doomed to failure. * He favored the maintenance of the present liquor laws, and ,heavily censured the Second Ballot Bill. THE TIMARU SEAT.
