TURANGA MUSICAL SOCIETY.

INAUGURAL CONCERT

The inaugural concert of the re-cently-formed Turanga Alusical Society was held in the Patutahi Public Hall last night. There was a splendid attendance, the Kail being crowded to the doors. An excellent'programme was submitted by the members of the society, and it was evidently keenly relished by ‘the audience, who showed unmistakeable signs of approval by demanding numerous encores. All's. Shierlaw, of Gisborne, was heard to advantage in her two selections. Airs Parsons was also in excellent voice, and contributed Aloir’s “Down the Vale” and “Nevermore” (Tito Alattei). The voices of Aliss WoodbineJohnson and Air. A. Gray blended sweetly in the ever-popular r duet “Life’s Dream is O’er,” and Aliss Woodbine-Jolmson’s pianoforte solo was nicely played. Air. A. Gray received an imperative recall for his singing of “Nirvana” (Stephen Adams), and Air. J. C. Woodward’s contribution “The Captain’s Ditty” (Adams) was enthusiastically received. The instrumental part of the programme was in the capable hands of Messrs AlcKay and Rliinesmith, whoso -duet “Scottish Airs” was artistically treated. Later on Air. AlcKay gave ia further display of his abilities as a violinist by his treatment of the item “Carnival de Venice.” A number of concerted items were given by the members of the society, with very pleasing harmonic effect, the balance of tone being splendidly preserved, and special attention being paid to expression. By no means the least enjoyable item in the programme was the overture “Waldmere Alarch” by the orchestra, which was well performed. The members of the society have- every reason to be proud of their initial performance, and the success which attended it should spur them on to even better work.

The members of the chorus were: —Sopranos: Alesdames Faulkner, Parsons, (Spence, "Woodward, Matthews, Knight, Alisses Watt (3), Bilbam, Gillman, AloKenzie, Sadler, Stevens, Bryson, Willson, Gray. Contraltos: Airs. Broadhurst, Alisses Falkner (2). Woodbine-Johnson;, Woodward, Slierratt, AlcKenzie, Newman (3), Watt, Camming (2). Tenons: Alessrs Parsons, Woodward, Spence, Steele, Jlilham. Basses: Alessrs Robb, Thomas, Bilham, Smith, Picken. Tabernacle, Alorrow, Lange, Sutherland.
