THE LAUREL AND THE FERNLEAF.

WELLINGTON, Oct. 3
The Now Zealand Government is desirous of making a cliango in tho design of -tho ll.ig which tho Governor of Now Zealand flies when on board ship. This ling is tlio Union Jack with a laurel wreath in tho centre, having within it tho stars of tho Southern Cross. Tlio Government desires, in connection with tho change in designation of this country from colony to Dominion, to substitute a wreath of fern leaves instend of -laurel loaves, t-lio flag remaining otherwise as it is at present. A similar privilege was granted to Canada in 1870 wiion the maple took the place -of the lmrel. Lord Plunkot, writing to the Colonial Office on tlio subject, says,; “The fern leaf is universally accepted in -this Dominion as the emblem of New Zealand, and I join with -my Government in trusting that your Lordship may find yourself jable to lay this request before tlio King for His Majesty’s favorablo consideration.”
