9 Tho Dominion letter-carriers are to jbo provided with a now shako (says ‘a AVollington correspondent). Sir. Jl'\ M. B. fisher, M. 8., hoard rumors that it was to weigh two pounds. Sir Joseph Ward says tho rumors nro not: true; the average weight will bo seven ounces all round, which is the same weight as tho police head gear. The department is assured by a leading firm of hatinakers that the weight is comparatively light for a uniform shako. Tho volunteer slouch lxats, which is understood to bo like 'that worn by tho troops in South Africa, weighs l-o ounces. A cample of tho slm'ko wa s submitted, some time ago, to the Wellington letter-carriers, who wore reported to he unanimously in favor of it as being in every way more suitable than any headgear yet provided for letter-carriers. Tho shako is designed to provide perfect protection from rain and sun.
