CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 1. After spending close on eleven months on Quail Island, one of the patients at tlio leper station, a young Maori, was discharged as cured and ■left for his home and friends in the interior of tlie North Island. .Dr. Misou, Chief Health Officer, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning, and, accompanied by 7 Dr. Upliam. Dr. Mason informed a reporter that the young Maori had been cured of liis malady by tlie Nastin treatment, which, the doctor explained, had been introduced some time back by Professor Deyeke, of Constantinople, where lie is in charge of a leprosy institute. Tlie treatment, which consists of an injection of a culture of tlie baccilus of leprosy, which acts ill much the same way as tuberculin, has been followed with considerable success. Dr. Mason, who had been in communication with Professor Deyeke, applied the Nastin treatment to the patients isolated at Quail Island, with very satisfactory results. The young Maori lias now been discharged as cured, although the disease lias ■left its mark on liis hands and feet. ,

The white man who lias now been on ifche island for two years!has benefitted very greitly by the treatment, and shows wonderful improvement in his condition. With regard to the Maori patient, who was brought down from the North Island about three weeks ago, Dr. Mason states that the treatment had been applied to him, but there had not been sufficient time to show any marked change in his condition.
