RECITAL AND LECTURE. His Majesty’s Theatre was crowded in every part last night, when Mr. A. J. Black, the temperance orator, appeared in the new role of an entertainer. Mr. John Townley occupied the chair, and Mr. Black, for the opening part of the programme, went through a variety entertainment of eleven atems, including monologues, impersonations, musical items, and dramatic recitations. AUr. Black showed a wonderful versality, and the conclusion of each item was greeted with round after round of applause. After a short interval, during which the Rev. F. W. Chatterton gave some interesting figures disproving the recent statements as to the amount of liquor imported into Ashburton and Invercargill under nolicense, Mr. Black commenced what he called a lectufette entitled “Pluckings.” The lecturette consisted of the recital of a •number of anecdotes, many of them personal and amusing. The stories were well received, and the lecturer’s remarks were frequently applauded by the large audience. A beauty vote of thanks to Mr. Black concluded the meeting.
